CHURCH OF SANTA MARGHERITA

Town: Castelnuovo
The church of Santa Maria is located on the slopes of Mount Civerone, and is one of the oldest churches in the valley, it survived the fifteenth-century destruction that the town faced.

It was built around 1100, enlarged in the second half of the sixteenth century with the addition of a Renaissance porch, which can still be admired today, later remodeled in 1846. Until the end of the eighteenth century it was maintained by a hermit.

On the facade you can still admire the traces of frescoes by the local painter Lorenzo Naurizio (1565), who also worked on its interior decoration; in the apse his frescoes were preserved during the nineteenth-century restorations.

A local legend tells that the columns of the porch were taken from the ancient castle of Castelnuovo. From the churchyard you can enjoy the beautiful panoramic view of the eastern Valsugana.
