Discovering
Trentino in winter without skiing is an experience that combines beauty,
sustainability, and regeneration.
Valsugana, recognised as the first sustainable destination in the world according to international GSTC (Global Sustainable Tourism Council) standards,
is the perfect place to immerse yourself in nature while respecting it. Far from the crowded slopes, you can experience an
authentic and innovative winter amidst whitewashed landscapes and enchanted villages.
Valsugana: what to see in Trentino in winter without skiing
Valsugana is a destination that offers a wide variety of winter experiences, perfect for non-skiers. For nature lovers, trekking along the Valsugana trails is a nice opportunity to spend a few hours in the open air. And to round off the day, a break in one of the many refuges in the valley, also open in winter, especially at weekends, to savour the local flavours, is a must.
Lovers of history and culture can explore the historical villages in the valley, such as Borgo Valsugana, which is part of the Most Beautiful Villages of Italy circuit, and other surrounding picturesque villages such as Levico Terme and Pergine Valsugana, rich in charm and tradition. For families, the panoramic walks along Lake Levico or Lake Caldonazzo are ideal for immersing oneself in nature without difficulty.
And to add a dash of winter fun? Don't miss the opportunity to go ice-skating: an activity suitable for young and old that offers moments of joy and relaxation.
Easy walks in Valsugana: the most beautiful villages in Trentino
One of the most pleasant experiences in Valsugana is walking through the historic villages and along the paths that connect them. Borgo Valsugana, with its characteristic alleys and bridges over the river Brenta, is one of the most charming towns in the valley. Equally fascinating are the villages of Levico Terme and Pergine Valsugana, where tradition and culture meet.
An unmissable stop is the village of Pieve Tesino. With its historic streets, characteristic buildings, and snowy landscapes that surround it, the village has been on the list of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy since 2021. Here you can discover the historical roots of Trentino, visit the Casa De Gasperi Museum, and let yourself be enveloped by the peace of a small corner of paradise, ideal for a regenerating walk in a fairytale setting.
Trekking in Valsugana: which routes to choose
The snow-covered mountains of the Valsugana offer scenery of extraordinary beauty, transforming each excursion into a unique and evocative experience. Walking among snow-covered woods and white landscapes is a special way to get in touch with winter nature, but it is important to remember that the mountains in winter, however fascinating they may be, entail risks. It is therefore essential to be adequately prepared, use the right equipment, and always inform yourself about the weather forecast and snow and ice conditions.
One of the most beautiful routes is the hike up to Malga Conseria and to Passo 5 Croci in Val Campelle, which offers a view of the imposing Cima d'Asta and the possibility of having lunch at the malga on weekends, savouring the local cuisine (8.5km, 550m positive altitude).
Another proposal, also suitable for families with children, is the trek to Rifugio Sette Selle, in the heart of Valle dei Mocheni, a place rich in culture and traditions. Here you can stop for lunch at the refuge, surrounded by an enchanting landscape (6.5km, 500m positive altitude difference).
For those who like to combine nature and history, the climb to Cima Vezzena, starting from the plateau of the same name, is ideal. At the top you will find the First World War fort, which dominates the valley and offers an unforgettable view of the Levico and Caldonazzo lakes (9km, 600m positive height difference).
The Lupa del Lagorai: experiences in nature
Among the unique experiences in Valsugana,
a visit to the Lupa del Lagorai is one of the most impressive. This
monumental sculpture was created in 2022 by artist Marco Martalar from the waste of Vaia, the storm that destroyed the forests of Trentino in October 2018. A symbol of the relationship between man and nature, it can only be
reached on foot:
-
Starting from Nif: Alpine Taste, a restaurant and hotel in Vetriolo Terme (formerly Maso Vetriolo Vecchio), a comfortable 1 km walk, about 15-20 minutes by forest road
- Starting from the car park at the Panarotta hut, head in the direction of La Bassa, passing Malga Masi before reaching the Lupa del Lagorai. From there continue towards Vetriolo and, passing first the Nif restaurant and then the thermal baths, continue along the tarmac road until you reach the dirt track that leads back to the Panarotta hut.
Lake Levico: the pearl of holidays in Trentino
In winter, Lake Levico is transformed into a magical place, where nature dresses itself in silence and charm. One of the most popular experiences is a walk along the Sentiero dei Pescatori, a path that runs along the lake, suitable for all ages, where you can immerse yourself in the tranquillity of the landscape and observe the reflections of the winter sky on the crystal-clear water.
During the Christmas period, Levico comes alive thanks to the Christmas Markets in the Hapsburg Park, an unmissable event that combines the magic of Christmas with the historical charm of the park. Here, among twinkling lights and the scent of spices and traditional sweets, you can experience a unique atmosphere, buy local handicrafts and taste Trentino specialities.
Mountain huts and malgas in Valsugana open in winter
A winter experience in Valsugana would not be complete without a stop at one of the valley's mountain huts or malgas, perfect for immersing oneself in Trentino's culinary tradition. During winter weekends, many malgas and refuges remain open, offering a warm welcome and typical dishes prepared with local ingredients.
Among the most popular destinations is Malga Conseria, located in the picturesque Val Campelle. It is the arrival point of an easy hike that offers breathtaking views and the chance to taste genuine Trentino dishes.
Another
destination not to be missed is the
Rifugio Sette Selle, nestled in the Val dei Mocheni. This mountain hut can be reached via a
medium-difficulty trek and offers an intimate atmosphere, ideal for regenerating oneself with a steaming polenta or a homemade strudel.
For those who want a
less-known but fascinating destination, the
Rifugio Monte Lefre is an excellent choice. Located above Borgo Valsugana, the refuge can be reached via a scenic hike and offers home-style cooking that celebrates the flavours of the area, with a view that embraces the valley below.
Every refuge or malga in Valsugana is an open door to authentic flavours and moments of relaxation, making winter a special occasion to discover the tastier and cosier side of the mountains.
