Fortress of civezzano
Towards the end of the 19th century, a fortified complex was built near Civezzano. The fortresses that dominated the two roads leading from Valsugana to Trento protected the access to the gorge of the Fersina stream.
The „
Obere Straßensperre“ is a one-story structure with an irregular plan. It was built of square limestone and equipped with positions for rifles and machine guns, 13 slots for riflemen at the front of the throat and two 12 cm guns, managed by a garrison consisting of one officer and 45 men.
The upper part represents the only intact example of a kind of 'transitional fortification' between the open 'Casamatte' works of the early 1860s and the later 'Vogl' style tank forts.
It was disarmed at the outbreak of the conflict with Italy and was spared demolition, perhaps because it was still considered functional for housing infantry troops. In 1918 it passed to the Italian military treasury and in 1956 it was ceded to the municipality of Civezzano.
