The Griffin of Tesino

THE GRIFFIN OF TESINO 

In the evening of October 29, 2018 the Alpine region of Northeast Italy was hit by a violent hurricane with 200km/hour winds that uprooted over 20 million spruces in few hours. This storm, one of Italy’s most devastating climate events of the last decades, was named Vaia.

The sculptor and wood artist Marco Martalar was deeply shaken by this event and as a mountain man and nature lover he wanted to experiment with a new technique to make sense of and revive this timber from wind fallen trees. 

His sculpture, the Griffin, a half-eagle, half-lion mythical creature is located in Celado on the Trentino-Veneto border and as a fusion of the heraldic animals of these two neighboring regions it symbolizes their historical and cultural relationship.

The Griffin was inaugurated on September 9, 2023 and can be visited every day of the year.


How to get there

You can arrive by car at the parking lots in Celado (at Ristorante Ai Larici or Camping Alice) and walk for 5/10 min. along a path/ dirt road.

As an alternative, you can leave your car in Castello Tesino and from there take a walk of about 1 hour and 20 minutes starting from the main church in Piazza S. Giorgio and following the "Grifone" signs. You go up along a path in the woods and then continue on a dirt road. Be careful because the last stretch (700/800 meters) you walk along a main road without sidewalks.
