Church in the convent of the Franciscan Friars

Town: Pergine Valsugana
The current church of the Franciscan Fathers was built between April 1906 (start of work) and October 1908 (consecration) on a project by the architect Giorgio Ciani of Trento. The facade recalls the church of San Babila in Milan as desired by the Chimelli family, who commissioned the work, also realized thanks to the collaboration of numerous citizens of Pergine and the surrounding hamlets.

The church replaced the one built on land made available by the noble family in Prato at the time of the establishment of the Convent (1606) and consecrated in 1612.

The periodic floods of the Fersina stream had deposited around the old church about 1.50 m of debris and sand (the beginning of the twentieth century to enter you had to go down 7 steps while in the seventeenth century you had to climb 2 steps)

Looking at the facade seems that the church is built with three naves, but it has only one. The left door leads into the cloister of the convent; the right one leads into a quadrangular room, part of the side nave. Above the three doors are the mosaics (1910) by Antonio Castaman of Venice with St. Francis delivering the "blessing" to Friar Leo (main door), the dove symbol of the Holy Spirit (door on the right) and coat of arms of the Franciscan Order (door on the left).

Inside: Pala dell'acqua benedetta of 1612; Via Crucis by Antonio Longo of 1819; Altarpiece of the main altar (by Polacco), altarpiece of Santa Chiara and altarpiece of San Francesco, all of them of the seventeenth century. Noteworthy is the cloister with a plaque that commemorates the family in Prato.

Nearby:

Salient fountain designed by the architect Eduino Maoro of Pergine (1924).

Monument to the fallen of all wars, by the sculptor Eraldo Fozzer of Trento (1958).

Capital of the Holy Crucifix (1655) with frescoes by the painter Argo Castagna of Pergine (1944).
