Hermitage of St. Lorenzo

Town: Borgo Valsugana
From Borgo, passing Olle, continuing along the provincial road that leads to Valle di Sella, at Km 4,550 there is an eighteenth-century capital dedicated to San Lorenzo, frescoed by an anonymous German painter, which was to be an important prayer point for the pilgrims traveling to the hermitage of the homonymous saint.

The church of San Lorenzo is located at 1185 meters on Mount Armentera and can be reached by forest road on the right continuing on the state road, passes the votive shrine, or from the Hotel Legno, along the SAT 210 path.

This medieval church was cared by a hermit until the end of the eighteenth century. It contains various layers of frescoes, which can be placed between the second half of the seventeenth and the first half of the sixteenth century, among which stands out the valuable cycle of San Lorenzo, built in the first half of the fourteenth century.

There are numerous graffiti on the frescoes, left by pilgrims in their visits in request for grace, dating back mostly to periods of plague or other calamities.

Information: For visits during the summer, contact the Municipal Library of Borgo Valsugana, Tel: (0039) 0461 754052.
