Altipiano di Vezzena
The wide plateau of
Vezzena is in front of
Levico Terme and it slowly degrades towards the plateau of the Sette Comuni. The plateau of Vezzena is the widest in
Trentino, it is a green plain made up of meadows and pastures, surrounded by dense woods and of mountain huts scattered around, which used to be ancient animal shelters during the summer, and currently used also for cheese production.
The delicious
cheese named “Vezzena” is produced here: it is one of the most ancient and popular cheese types in Trentino. It is renowned for its peculiar flavour, which was famous already during the
Hapsburgs. The Vezzena was always present on the table of the Emperor Francis Joseph.
During the
First World War the entire area, which includes also the
plateaus of Folgaria, Lavarone and Luserna staged battles and fights, as you can still infer from the
Austrian forts which belonged to the war defence line built by the
Austrian-Habsburgs.
The plateau hosts many mountain huts and forts, it is crossed by walking routes to enjoy in the summer and cross-country tracks in the winter: a true paradise for cross-country skiers, thanks to tens of km of tracks surrounded by incomparably beautiful landscapes. The plateau is ideal for walks and snow-shoes excursions, in full freedom.
How to reach the Vezzena plateau:
You can drive along the narrow provincial road from Caldonazzo to Monterovere, or from Calceranica al Lago and then along the national road no. 349 towards Lavarone-Vezzena.
